  Hints for Traveling in Italy
(please send your hints and suggestions to add to this page)

Traveling in Italy: Most foreigners find our narrow and winding roads and heavy traffic a little difficult to manage. We have a very good train system and many local buses in the major cities. If it's the major art cities that interest you, it its better to use public transportation rather than rent a car. If on the other hand you want to see more of Italy and want to rent a car, book one in advance from home because you get a cheaper rate, the italian goverment gives rent a car companies incentives to encourage tourism.
Telephones:in Italy there are still many places that have no "touch-tone dialing" if you need to access your voice-mail frequently it is a good idea to get a touch-tone generator.
If you need to connect your computer to Internet, learn how to set up your modem to "Pulse" to be able to connect using an analog line.
You can buy inexpensive cellular phones with telephone cards, if you are staying a while it is worth it - cellphone coverage is very good all over.
Money: One dollar is worth between Lit 2050 and Lit 2150 - to calculate prices into USD simply divide by 2 and take off 3 zeros.Hotels give a bad exchange rate, use the bank or your cash card, you can change money in the Italian Post Office also, they often have better exchange rates and they are open saturday mornings
ATM: there are many ATM machines all over, please remember to ask your bank to allow your card for withdrawing money abroad and the password.
Credit Cards: Most places will take credit cards but smaller shops and some businesses do not accept them, if you intend to shop, carry some local cash with you.
Tipping:In Europe waiting staff get a monthly salary and benefits, while tipping is not mandatory, it is a sign of appreciation, a tip between 5% and 10% is a good tip
Shopping: Clothes, shoes, leather goods, gourmet foods, Art, Italy is a shoppers paradise! Although in theory prices are supposed to be fixed, in markets and tourist shops a little bargaining is allowed, they will give you a 10% discount if you insist a little bit, or something extra, it doesn't work in restaurants and food stores. If you don't want to lug home a lot of weight, try my gourmet store, http://www.e-italianfoods.com/  some of Italys best gourmet specialties, from Lucca Olive oil, 30 yrs old balsamic vinegar real Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and truffles, delivered to your door, no customs, no sweat!
Personal safety:Most italian cities are very safe, safer than the average US city, there are places though where you should be careful: airports, train stations in particular and crowded places -keep you luggage always in front of you and your wallet safely tucked away. It is better not exibit expensive jewellery and money on the road as you never know who's looking - keep to the main streets and avoid dark alleys at night, especially in Napoli .
Police: There are two types of police:
POLIZIA in light blue and white cars which is the local municipal police and traffic police, they handle small things like lost items, fines, small thefts, licences etc.
CARABINIERI in black and red cars they are a branch of the military and they are like criminal police or federal police, they handle more serious crimes then the POLIZIA.
